Thriller movies - Opening sequences

 Thriller movies

Trainspotting intro:

1) Why did he stop running when he came in front of the car?

2) Why did they steal?

3) Why is he smoking so much?

What is the point of a film opening sequence?

The point of a opening sequence is so it can start the film off and introduce what the movie is about.

Conventions of an opening sequence:

it is used for introducing characters and giving a simple insight into the film. For example,  credits, title of a film, hint to genre, foreshadowing, mise-en-scene and location.

Reservoir Dogs:

The opening sequence starts with a group of guys sitting down and they get given names by the man standing, one of them complain about their name being "Mr pink" and someone else says who cares what the name is. The men are discussing different things about planning their heist.  This foreshadows the films narrative as they were discussing their plans of their heist there were clues that foreshadow the rest of the film for example, Mr. pink doesn't believe in tipping and later on refuses to tip the waitress which shows that he looks out for himself which what he does when the heist goes wrong. Reservoir doesn't create enigma.

Se7en:

In the this trailer the open sequence establishes scenes/shots of the characters trying to find out/investigate what happened and some scenes/shots of action. The trailer foreshadows the films narrative as detective William Somerset mentions the 7 deadly sins to the others and says "your gonna expect 5 more of these", and the films narrative is the two detectives on the hunt for a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins. Se7en does create enigma as there is a mystery as to who the serial killer could be as detective William says there's no fingerprints or witnesses of any kind and the other detective agrees saying no.
